A formulaic, but still fun, slice of coming of age through sports story that slightly suffers from the imaginative (but colorful) direction by Drew Barrymore. It's saved by the team of game cast members she's brought together to light up the screen. Ellen Page leads the pack as the bemused teenager that gets caught up in the world of Roller-Derby. The script (based on the book of the same name) is uninterested with major dramatic moments and plays things as realistic and subtle as the structure can permit. Stunt choreographer Zoe Bell (who's also in the film as a team member) lays creates a few pockets of painful looking derby action.
Shame on introducing the Canadian MANSON TWINS and doing zilch with them.
